Indian Tycoons Urged to Switch to Solar Energy
In New Delhi the head of a U.N. climate change panel is urging the Indian trade and industry to switch over to solar energy for a sustainable future. Here's that report.
The chief of the UN Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is calling on India’s top business leaders to support the country’ solar energy mission and help ensure a sustainable future. This comes ahead of the CEO World Forum that opens this Thursday in New Delhi.
Mr. R. K Pachauri explains how, according to the national action plan on climate change, India is to generate 20,000 megawatts of solar power by the year 2022.
[R K Pachauri, Head, UN IPCC]:
"This is a very ambitious and a very visionary plan because by 2021-2022, that's the fiscal year, the intention is for the country to establish 20,000 megawatts of solar capacity. And this doesn't include other form of renewable energy, just solar power generating capacity. And I think this is where businesses and industry has to seize the opportunity."
The National Solar Energy Mission, launched in January this year, aims to sustain the country's growth based on renewable and clean sources of energy in the near future.

Cleantech Exhibition 14 – Israel Look to Solar Energy
Clean technologies are increasingly being used to produce energy and preserve water throughout the world. The Fourteenth annual exhibition of clean technologies is currently being held in Tel-Aviv, Israel. Usually identified with progressive water technologies, Israel has mostly examples of solar technology at the exhibit this year. Despite recent discoveries of great quantities of gas, the Israeli government continues to allocate incentives for solar energy development.

Germany is a country much colder than Israel and with much less sun, yet it has a long tradition of using solar energy.
The Chairman of the German company Abakus came to Israel for one day to visit his partner Sun City which is participating in the Cleantech Exhibition.
[Thomas Sandner, Board Chairman, Abakus]:(Male, English)
"When we talk about energy in northern countries we always mean heating. And I think that in a country where we have more sunlight we will talk about air conditioning that is more suitable to solar application.”
There is also a commitment to the future of the developing countries that will face difficulties trying to meet their increasing need for energy.
[Thomas Sandner –Chairman Abakus Board] :(man, English)
"All these developing countries will need a new kind of energy because otherwise we will not be able to provide the demand of the people in the long run."
Cleantech also offers energy-saving options, such as light bulbs made to last for 40,000 hours.
[Ofir Ruziac, CEO Ralco Energy - Sharp]: (male, Hebrew )
"We're talking about low energy consumption of electricity. The light bulb is capable of working for two-and-a-half hours for less than half a cent."
The heat, color and wattage of the bulb can be remotely controlled.

Given the large quantity of sunlight in Israel, future energy development depends on Cleantech, and we are sure to learn about some new technologies next year.

Solar Car Unveiled in Manila, The Philippines
The Philippines is among the top carbon emitters in Southeast Asia. Engineering students created a solar-powered car to inspire others to take pollution more seriously.
“Sikat” is a racecar with a flat body, a narrow single seat, and three wheels the size of a big pizza. It is powered by solar cells.
[Byron Omboy, Engineering Faculty Member, De La Salle University]:
"The solar cells absorb the radiation from the sun, converts it to electricity, and it will be stored by a battery. The battery is lithium iron phosphate battery, and then the battery will drive the motor."
The car can run up to eight hours on a single charge. The nearly 600 battery cells in Sikat can enable it to run at night or when it rains.
The car designers needed to strike a balance between sun exposure and aero-dynamics, which the car must rely on as it has no fuel engine to boost its power. The car has a light shell in the shape of a teardrop, made of fiberglass and carbon fiber.
[Carl Mamawal, Engineering Student, De La Salle University]:
"From a regular car it's not that different. It's like an automatic vehicle, there's no clutch. You only have the gas and the brake. Driving it is quite easy.”
Sikat is not ready for mass production. It lacks the space to seat more passengers and needs to be re-designed as a more practical vehicle. Furthermore, solar energy has yet to break significantly into the mainstream Philippine market.
But Sikat has helped raised public awareness on the environment as it tours schools and malls around the country.
The team will take Sikat to Australia to race in the World Solar Challenge in 2011
